Neighbor Alert: Be Aware of Suspicious Home Security Visits

We wanted to make you aware of a recent incident involving someone going door-to-door claiming to represent a home security company.

A Woodgate resident recently reported that a man came to their door claiming to be with Brinks Home Security and insisting that their home security panel needed to be replaced. When the homeowner explained they had ADT, the man claimed that Brinks and ADT had merged.

The homeowner declined and asked the man to leave. After contacting ADT directly, they were told that equipment service visits are scheduled in advance and warned about similar scams.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, this is a known tactic used by some deceptive door-to-door security salespeople. They may claim your security company has been acquired, your equipment is outdated, or that an immediate upgrade is required. Their goal may be to gain access to your home or get you to sign a new security monitoring contract.

What should you do if someone unexpectedly approaches your home about your security system?

• Don't allow them inside without verifying their identity and the reason for the visit.

• Don't share account information, security codes or passwords.

• Contact your security provider directly using its official phone number.

• Don't sign anything or agree to equipment changes under pressure.

• Report suspicious or aggressive behavior to the Carrollton Police Department.

Fact Check:

We've also confirmed that ADT and Brinks Home have not merged. ADT's 2025 annual filing, published in 2026, specifically identifies Brinks Home Security as a competitor. The visitor's reported merger claim is false.

We're sharing this simply to help neighbors stay informed. While we can't confirm the visitor's intentions, the circumstances are consistent with documented home security scams.
