Hello neighbors, I am Rick Wood. My wife Sara and I have had the pleasure of calling Woodgate home for the past 35 years. This is where we raised our three sons, and like many of you, we have a deep love and appreciation for this wonderful neighborhood.

I was recently asked by Sean Bruce, our WNA President, and the members of the Board to take on a new role as Government Relations Liaison for the Woodgate Neighborhood Association. I wanted to introduce myself in this new capacity and give you a sense of what this role is all about.

What is the Government Relations Role?

According to our current and past WNA bylaws, there is a standing government committee tasked with keeping an eye on city and local government matters that could impact our neighborhood. For now, I’ll be serving solo in a liaison capacity.

My focus will be on monitoring City of Carrollton activity, especially zoning proposals and actions by the city council—such as those involving short-term rentals (STRs) or bed and breakfast properties. I’ll also track neighborhood crime reports, city repair notices, and street closures that could affect our area.

Of course, the scope of this role might evolve over time. Some topics may become more pressing than others, and I’ll keep the board and all of you updated. If things pop up that need quick attention, you will hear from me via a email special alerts, in the monthly newsletter or on our official WNA Facebook Group

Update on Short-Term Rentals (STRs) and Bed & Breakfasts

At the May 6th Carrollton City Council meeting, a significant development took place. The council approved an amendment to Ordinance #4127 that temporarily prohibits, for one year, any new applications or permits for STRs and B&Bs.

So, is the issue resolved? Not quite.

  • This is a pause, not a permanent fix. The city plans to use this time to gather data, conduct public outreach, and analyze the impact of STRs on neighborhoods like ours.

  • Some properties are grandfathered. Those already operating under prior rules can continue.

  • There may be exemptions. A second amendment allows for limited, temporary exemptions for new STRs and B&Bs that meet specific criteria.

The Good News? We’re Being Heard.

The ordinance recognizes the very real concerns raised by residents—concerns about noise, safety, and the character of our neighborhoods. It’s clear that the strong attendance and thoughtful voices of Woodgate residents, our fellow neighbors in our area and across Carrollton made an impact. We’ll need to keep showing up! A final decision on the future of STR and B&B regulation is still ahead, and our input will be essential when that time comes.

Crime Watch: A Quiet Month

Some great news to end on—there were no reported crimes in Woodgate last month. That’s something to be proud of! Did you also know you can stay up-to-date and monitor crimes in our area by viewing the Community Crime Map? You can find the link on the Woodgate Home Page.

Stay safe and stay classy, Woodgate!
